Moves 4 Life Garyry Kasparov Simultaan

09 Nov 2011Here is a update from Moves For Life:

Dear all
This is my last general communication with regards to the Kasparov Chess Exhibition which is being held at the Sci-Bono centre on this coming Sunday (13th November).
The programme for the event has now been finalised and is attached. If you are intending to visit the centre on the day, please use this final programme in order to plan your visit accordingly.
Anyone that wants to attend the event as a spectator can simply purchase an entrance ticket at the door on the day. Entrance to the centre is R20 for adults and R10 for children
Whilst the Sci-Bono Centre can accommodate up to 2 000 visitors, space in their auditorium is limited to approximately 200. The auditorium will be used for the 10.30 address by GM Garry Kasparov and anyone wanting to listen to this address is encouraged to arrive early in order to secure a seat in the venue. There will be standing room for additional spectators if this is required.
The list of the 30 participants who will play in the exhibition is now almost final and the auction for the last ticket to participate in the exhibition will close at 9pm tonight! Anyone still wishing to participate in the exhibition should visit http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/49756971/Participant_ticket_to_Garry_Kasparov_Simultaneous_Chess_Exhibition.html in order to submit a bid.
To date, the nine daily auctions that have been run by BidorBuy have raised in excess of R50 000(!) for Moves for Life. This is a truly fantastic result and will greatly assist the development of chess in schools in the future.
Confirmed celebrities who will be participating or attending the exhibition include actors Zane Meas (Neville Meintjies, 7de Laan), Katlego Danke (Dineo Mashaba, Generations), Thato Molamu (Nicholas Nomvethe, Generations) and Lethabo Gumede (Luyando Nkosi, My perfect family)! In addition, a number of high profile politicians are expected to attend the event.
The exhibition will be broadcast on the national news of SABC 1, 2 and 3 as well as e-TV and will also be covered by a host of local newspapers. The press will be conducting interviews with both players and spectators during the course of the day and the expected media coverage is obviously a major coupe for chess in South Africa.
For those that are unable to attend in person, please note that 10 games from the exhibition will also be broadcast live from the venue via the Moves for Life website (www.movesforlife.co.za).
Please feel free to contact me directly should you have any specific questions that are not covered above.
Regards
Graham

31 Oct 2011Here is a message from Moves for Life

Dear all
The 13th World Chess Champion Mr Garry Kasparov is planning to visit Gauteng in November as a guest of the Moves for Life chess programme. He is widely recognised as the strongest chess player in the history of the game but has also gained worldwide acclaim as both a writer and political activist.
As part of the activities planned during the trip, Garry is preparing to play in a very rare simultaneous chess exhibition on Sunday 13th November! He will play against approximately 30 opponents who will include a number of high profile politicians, celebrities and sports personalities. The event is consequently expected to attract both local and international media interest!
About the exhibition
The exhibition will be commence at 11am and will be held at the SCI-BONO DISCOVERY CENTRE, corner of Miriam Makeba and President Street, Newtown, Johannesburg (see http://www.sci-bono.co.za for details and http://www.sci-bono.co.za/home/index2.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=104&Itemid=106 for directions.
Seats on auction!
The organisers will be auctioning a very limited number of seats to this simultaneous exhibition via the bidorbuy website in an auction process that will commence on Monday 31st October!
The bidorbuy website will initially auction one seat per day between the 31st October and the 5th November and these seats will provide a “once in a life-time” opportunity for chess fanes to participate in a historic match against arguably the greatest chess player that the world has ever seen.
The auctions will commence at 9am each morning and will close at 21.00 each evening. Bids open from R1 and anyone that is interested in submitting a bid may do so directly via the bidorbuy website at www.bidorbuy.co.za.
The auction is listed under the “Unusual Items” category and can be accessed directly via the Charity page, or at http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/49175021/Participant_ticket_to_Gary_Kasparov_Simultaneous_Chess_Exhibition.html
Participation conditions
1. Any chess player with a national or international chess rating of less than 2000 may participate.
2. Individuals who do not have a formal chess rating may also participate.
3. Participants are required to arrange their own transportation to the venue and are required to report to the organisers at the venue by no later than 10am on the morning of the 13th November.
4. All participants in the simultaneous exhibition will receive a certificate, signed by Garry Kasparov, after the match. There will also be photo opportunities for participants.
Spectators
Entry fees to the Sci-Bono centre are R20 for adults and R10 for children and spectators are welcome to visit the centre if they wish to watch the former world champion in action! This is a unique opportunity in itself and I would encourage junior players in particular to make an effort to attend the event as a spectator if they are unable to secure a seat in the event.
Use of funds
All funds raised through this exhibition will be used to fund the chess development activities of the Kasparov Chess Foundation Africa and Moves for Life.
Should you have specific questions with regards to this unique opportunity, please kindly feel free to contact me at this address of alterntatively use the “ask a question” facility available on the bidorbuy website.
Regards
Graham Jurgensen

27 Aug 2011So far the Mid-Gauteng trials have gone off smoothly. There were one or two hickups with the DGT boards but things seems to be going smoothly now.
Things are busy heating up at the start of Round 5. There were a few upsets and that has caused consternation amongst the players.
Meiring (u10) won against Dirk in Round 3.
Nadia (u10) won against Trevelyn in Round 3.
Franco (u12) won against Werner in Round 1.
Ulrich (u12) won against Simone in Round 3.

As in the USN Jakaranda open we will have the electronic boards up again.

Hopefully we have solved the problems that we have experienced during the Jakaranda Open and it will be running more smoothly this time. We will also have two screens in the school hall were you can watch the live games as well. The plan is to have 2 boards for the U16-20 group. 3 each for the U14 and U12 groups and 2 for the U10's. You can use the link on the left on the menu to watch these games.

A player without a rating is given a temporary rating for the tournament based on the players performance during the tournament. This temporary rating is then used to calculate the performance rating of the players in the tournament. Gunther has assured us that this is the way that he does it so that it does not impact negatively on the other players in the tournament.
